INTERVIEW Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki

They portray the Winchester brothers in Supernatural and, in real life as on screen, their complicity is obvious. It’s hard to keep a straight face when you’re in company of Jared and Jensen who visibly get along really well.

Do you remember the first time you met?
Jensen Ackles: Yes, it was during our last audition in front of the channel’s executives.
Jared Padalecki: Exactly. What’s weird is that we had both worked on WB series, Jensen in Dawson’s Creek and me in Gilmore Girls, but we had never met.

Can we say today that you’ve become friends?
Jared: No, I hate this guy!
Jensen: And I feel the same about him. Honestly we can’t stand each other! [Laughs]
Jared: No, seriously, I quickly realized how lucky I was to work with Jensen. Spending 18 hours a day with someone you have nothing in common with is unbearable. There are a lot of actors in Hollywood who show off and who I could never get along with. Fortunately, Jensen is not like that.
Jensen: Thanks. In fact, Jared and I are two laid back guys from Texas who grew up in the same kind of environment. We like sports and drinking a beer while watching a game, even if we don’t support the same basketball teams. He’s from San Antonio and I’m from Dallas and our only fights happen when these two teams confront each other.

You’ve never argued on the set?
Jensen: It happens once in two years. We got on each other’s nerves at the end of the day after a scene because we were both exhausted. When Jared went back to his trailer, I thought it really was stupid to argue like that. I knocked on his door, he opened and it was over. We hugged each other and we haven’t talked about it again.
Jared: I don’t even remember why we argued! [Laughs]

Is there something the other continuously does that irritates you?
Jensen: Jared is too tall. Really too tall! [Laughs] I’m 6’1” tall and, with him being 6’5”, I look like a dwarf!
Jared: To take his revenge, he slaps me on the head each time he has to climb on an apple box to hide our difference in height when we’re doing photo sessions! [Laughs]

The show is really scary, but also very funny. Was that element of comedy already there in the first scripts or is it from your personal touch?
Jared: No, the humor was already there right from the start and that’s what makes the show so pleasant to shoot.
Jensen: The scriptwriters have managed to find the right balance between horror and comic effects. Even the darkest episodes contain funny lines. Personally, that’s what attracted me when I read the script. I liked the part of Dean straight away because of his comic potential. I love comedy and I’m very excited when the scenarists devise funny scenes between the two brothers.

You’re currently shooting season 2, how will your characters change compare to season 1 which is currently airing in France?
Jared: Little by little, Sam is going to understand that he can’t escape his destiny and he’s going to get closer to his family.
Jensen: In fact, through season 2, we witness a real turn around in the situation: Dean starts thinking back on his job as a ghost hunter while Sam now wants to follow into his father’s steps.

You stop shooting season 2 in April. What have you planned for your holidays?
Jensen: I’m currently reading scripts in order to play in a movie during the summer. That will also be the opportunity to rest and to catch up on my sleep. Jared and I also have to go to Europe in May to promote the show. Apart from that, I intend to spend some time in Texas with my family and my friends.
Jared: Last year at the same time, all I was thinking about was: “I’m gonna sleep for 3 entire months.” But finally, I attended the diploma ceremony of my brother, who finished his medicine studies, I went to my best friend’s wedding, I celebrated my little sister’s 21st birthday and I traveled around the world, including China. So, this year, I intend to work and to find a script I like. Then, I’ll start going for auditions hoping to find an interesting project.

Jared, since you’ve been shooting in Vancouver, you’ve been living far from your girlfriend Sandra McCoy. How do you stand this separation?
Jared: The transition was very hard to cope with at the beginning, but, now, we adjusted and it’s fine. She comes to the set as often as possible. Everybody knows her and loves her here. I go back to Los Angeles every weekend to be with her. Sandy and I spend a lot of time in airports and spend a lot of money in long-distance calls, but it’s worth it.
Jensen: Sandy is a wonderful girl and I confirm that everybody loves her.

Jensen Ackles started his career as a model at the age of 4. In 1992, the year this picture was taken, he nevertheless more and more thinks about taking acting classes. However, he prefers concentrating on his studies and getting his high school diploma before going into an acting career like his father who’s an actor in Dallas, Texas.
